And if you are wondering why that run of examples came to an abrupt halt, it’s because James van der Beek’s IMDB also comes to an abrupt halt. I could have included another example of how his character on the animated Disney show Vampirina is like if Dawson were doing bad voice-over work, but that’s probably an inaccessible reference for most of us. So why are most of the references to James van der Beek’s IMDB mostly inaccessible? Because he’s got that Dawson Leery stench on him. My ability to like James van der Beek but hate how much Dawson Leery has infected everything he does is a duality that almost feels like proof of God in a certain light.

Anyway, as with Dawson, a wet-blanket central character as the unlikable center of gravity for a story isn’t without precedent. Popular culture is replete with examples of them:

1.Meredith Grey (Grey’s Anatomy). If I were Derek, I would have let myself get hit by a car too.

2.Charlie Brown (Charlie Brown). Lucy and Snoopy are infinitely more captivating. Even Pig Pen is shrouded in a mystery of dirt and stank that’s more compelling than Charlie Brown. We should call him Charlie Beige because I’d rather drown in a vat of beige paint than watch stories built around him.

3.Duke (G. I. Joe). C’mon, he’s Community College Captain America.

4.Bella (Twilight). I’ve heard cheese tooties with more characterization.

5.Jon Snow (Game of Thrones). We’re supposed to believe the savior of Westeros is the same size as Kristin Chenoweth? Nice try, HBO.

2,942,716. Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother). I dunno, man. I think I’d rather drink leprosy than hang out with a character like Ted. Even within the show, Ted Mosby was the character tax you had to pay to hang out with Barney, Robin, Lily, and Marshall. What a third nipple of a character.
